Travel tips for safari & wildlife tours
Safari & Wildlife Tours feature opportunities to view wildlife in their natural habitat, learn about the flora, fauna, and ecology of a region, as well as interact with local communities in the destinations you visit. Each tour also includes a focus on conservation and preservation efforts, which you’ll discuss with your Tour Director, local guide, expert naturalist, or park ranger. You can always count on a small group of 10–22 travelers on Safari & Wildlife Tours.
On each of our African safari packages, you’ll enjoy game drives with your group in 4x4 safari Land Cruiser vehicles. Your guide on safari is also your driver, and they’ll be able to tell you all about the African animals you see. You’ll spend a lot of time driving over the “African highway”—miles of rocky dirt roads—so be prepared for a bit of a bumpy (but totally amazing) ride. You can expect unique forms of transportation on wildlife tours too: think boat rides, nature walks, and train rides.
The accommodations on your group safari tours and wildlife tours have been handpicked and tested by our staff on the ground. Each hotel is designed to make the most of your incredible natural surroundings—that means lodge-style accommodations with modern amenities, so you’ll have the comforts of home with an adventurous twist.
The best months for safari trips to Tanzania or Kenya are July through October. That’s when major animal migrations happen across the Serengeti and Masai Mara, and seeing some amazing wildlife is practically guaranteed.
Safari trips to South Africa, Botswana, and Zimbabwe are best during the dry season between April and October. There will be less vegetation, which makes spotting animals easier, and wildlife will tend to gather around watering holes for a drink. It’s the perfect chance to see lots of species at once!
The best time for wildlife trips to the Americas depends on your destination. For example, Central America has a tropical climate year-round, while Alaska is most comfortable during the summer months.
What countries are best for an African safari? Many of our African safari vacation packages offer a wildlife adventure experience for the whole tour. Trips to Kenya, Tanzania, or Zimbabwe and Botswana immerse you in Africa’s natural beauty and offer daily game drives for wildlife viewing. If you want a mix of city and nature, our South African safari tours are a perfect choice. You’ll have a few days of game drives, as well as the chance to explore the cultural capital of Cape Town.
Know you want to travel on our safari trips, but aren’t sure which one’s right for you? One of our expert Tour Consultants can help you choose your perfect tour.
We offer wildlife tours in Latin America and North America. You can visit the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve in Costa Rica, or experience the untamed wilderness of Denali National Park in Alaska. Our offering is always growing, so check back often to see what new destinations are added!
Packing for Safari & Wildlife tours can feel intimidating but a few simple tips can get you prepared!
- Lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered are always recommended.
- Always being a sturdy pair of walking shoe.
- A sun hat, sunglasses, and rain gear will help you stay comfortable in all types of weather.
- Sunscreen, insect repellent, hand sanitizer, and binoculars are other must-haves while on tour.
- When packing for African safari trips, remember that luggage restrictions on game drives are strictly enforced. You’ll need to bring a soft, flexible duffle—hard suitcases are forbidden on safari vehicles to ensure everyone’s comfort and safety. Because of this, you’ll want to pack light.
- One expert tip? Wear muted or light-colored clothing, as brighter colors can scare animals away.
Once you’ve booked one of our wildlife tours or African safari packages, we’ll send you more detailed information to get you ready for your trip. That includes a packing list you can use to plan for your wildlife tour or safari tour.
