Travel tips for Jordan trips
Planning a trip to Jordan? The top places to visit on our Jordan tours include:
- The Siq in Petra. This narrow mountain passage formed when an earthquake split the stone in half. Yearly floods have opened the crack even more. It’s now a natural pathway that makes for an incredibly unique hike. Here’s why one traveler loved hiking Petra.
- The Treasury in Petra. Most people know Petra for this site because it’s featured in the film Indiana Jones. But it’s so much more than that. In ancient times, everyone knew this was where the jewels and gold were kept, but when westerners discovered it in the 1800s, they couldn’t get in. There are even bullet holes in the facade from when the explorers attempted to shoot their way through the wall.
- The ruins of Jerash. Explore some of the world’s largest and best-preserved Roman ruins—ruins that were hidden for hundreds of years under the shifting sands. This once-great ancient city played host to the likes of Alexander the Great, the emperors Trajan and Hadrian, and the mathematician Nichomachas. Today, it’s a top spot on guided tours to Jordan.
- The city of Amman. This is Jordan’s capital city, and a must-visit staple on all Jordan trips. Explore the ruins of the citadel and Roman theater, walk through the Old City, and take in all the culture around you.
- The Red Sea Marine Peace Park. The array of coral reefs and incredible underwater visibility make this park one of the best spots in the world to snorkel. Discover how Jordan and Israel work together to protect the ecosystem’s natural beauty and wildlife. Then, hop in the water to view the colorful coral and fish for yourself.
The best times for taking a tour to Jordan are during the spring (April and May) and fall (October and November). This is when it’s dry, not too hot, and not too crowded. Summers are also a popular time for Jordan trips, but it tends to get very hot (sometimes more than 95°F).
Jordan has a small, yet growing wine industry. These are two of the best vineyards to visit on tours in Jordan:
- St. George by Zumot Wines. Located in Amman, this is the only 100% organic vineyard in the country.
- Jordan River Wines. This was the first wine-tasting operation in Jordan. There, you can take a guided tour through the history of winemaking in the region.
Here’s a list of what we recommend you pack for all of our Jordan tours:
- Loose, light clothing
- Layers to stay comfortable in changing weather
- Lots of sunscreen, as there is little shade
- A hat to protect you from the sun
- A warm sweatshirt or jacket for cool nights
- A water bottle to keep hydrated
- A flashlight or headlamp for camps and caves
- A scarf to cover your shoulders
One of the best parts of visiting Jordan is the food! These are the dishes we recommend trying on all of our guided trips to Jordan:
- Masaf. Made with tender lamb meat layered with paper-thin flatbread, aromatic rice, and nuts, Jordan’s national dish is a must-try.
- Falafel. These crisp, fried balls of spiced, ground chickpeas are a beloved street food. You’ll find it served at breakfast piled with fresh mint, or loaded into pita for a quick lunch sandwich. You might even enjoy it plated on a large salad for dinner.
- Maqluba. Sometimes served as a tidy cake and other times served as a messy bowl, this classic comfort food is made of slow-simmered rice, chicken, potatoes, vegetables, and everything delicious.
Going on one of our group tours to Jordan? Here are some do’s and don’ts:
- Do: Stand up and shake hands when meeting people.
- Don’t: Interrupt or pass in front of a praying Muslim.
- Do: Accept a cup of Arabic coffee when offered, as it’s rude to turn it down.
- Don’t: Openly consume food or beverages during the holy month of Ramadan, so check when it is beforehand.
- Do: Dress modestly when you go out on your Jordan tour.
- Don’t: Wear leggings, t-shirts, or shorts, as it’s considered provocative.
- Do: Have the best time ever on your Jordan group tour!
