Travel tips for Mykonos trips
From charming villages to sparkling beaches to lively waterfront tavernas, all who travel to Mykonos will find plenty to do here. Here are a few ideas to help get you started.
- Explore Mykonos Town. Be sure to take your camera—and your appetite—with you, as you’ll find photo ops and street food vendors around every corner.
- Stroll along the waterfront in Little Venice. Even better: Come for sunset.
- Enjoy some R&R on the beach. Mykonos has more than 25 to choose from, and you can explore them during free time on our Mykonos trips.

Travelers who visit Mykonos in September and October will enjoy warm, sunny weather and water that’s still warm enough for swimming, but none of the bigger crowds of travelers who vacation in Greece during peak summer months.
If you enjoy the energy of larger crowds, or if you’re thinking of joining one of our Mykonos tours solo and hope to meet fellow travelers from around the world, consider summertime Mykonos tours.

Some highlights you can see on our trips to Mykonos—either with your group or during your free time—include:
- Mykonos Town. Wander along winding, stone-lined streets for photo ops and tasty street-food snacks.
- Little Venice. Situated at the edge of the Aegean Sea, this charming neighborhood is filled with restaurants, tavernas, and prime spots for people-watching.
- Church of Panagia Paraportiani. Located by the sea in Kastro, this whitewashed church is among the most photographed in Greece, if not the world.
- The Kato Myli windmills. Though they’re no longer functional, these grain mills, which were built in the 16th century and stand together on a strip of land above the sea, are among Mykonos’s most recognizable (and photographed) sites.
- Delos. Though it’s not actually on Mykonos, this island is worth a day trip thanks to its rich, mythological history. You can visit it during an optional excursion on our The Greek Islands: Mykonos, Santorini & Crete tour.
Craving some fun in the sun? Check out Mykonos’s best beaches in our roundup of 19 of the most beautiful beaches in Greece to visit during your free time →
The best Mykonos trips include time at the beach, so you’ll want to pack for fun in the sun. Here are some essentials for your suitcase.
- A swimsuit. Because a dip in Mykonos’s clear, blue water is too good to pass up.
- A coverup. For quick trips to the snack bar and the bathroom, or for a casual lunch by the beach.
- Sun protection. A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen will protect your skin from the sun whether you’re lounging on the beach or walking around town,
- Comfortable walking shoes. For navigating Mykonos Town’s stairs and stone-lined streets.
- A small tote. To keep beach reads, a water bottle, and SPF within easy reach.
- Light layers. A light wrap, cardigan, or jacket can come in handy when cool ocean breezes blow in at night.
- Sandals or flip-flops. Easy to slip on or off for trips to and from the beach.
- A little something chic. In case you want to experience the island’s nightlife.
One perk of traveling on our tours of Mykonos? Exploring the island’s cuisine alongside expert local guides. Whether dining with your tour mates or striking out on your own, here are a few dishes to try on Mykonos:
- Kopanisti. Thick, creamy, and with a peppery flavor, this spreadable sheep’s-milk cheese is often served with bread as a starter.
- Mostra. Often served alongside ouzo, this dish consists of a large barley rusk, which is topped with a layer of kopanisti cheese, diced tomato (or grapes, depending on the season), olive oil, oregano, and capers.
- Louza. Often served in paper-thin slices, this cured pork product is like a cousin of Italian prosciutto.
- Rafiolia. Sometimes served for breakfast, these sweet treats are made from fried dough, honey, orange, and cinnamon, though you might spot savory versions around the island, too.
- Melopita. Simple, sweet, and satisfying, this popular Mykonian dish is made by wrapping sheets of pastry dough around a filling of tirovolia cheese, cinnamon, and honey.
If you’re a member of the LGBTQIA community, know that Mykonos is one of the most welcoming and gay-friendly destinations in the world. Nightlife is a major draw for international tourists, but if you’re not looking to party, don’t worry. Our Mykonos tour packages include plenty of free time to visit tranquil beaches and other serene spots around the island where you can rest, relax, and recharge.
