Travel tips for Copenhagen trips
Depending on what you're looking for there are different times of the year that make Copenhagen so special to visit. Some of the best times to visit Copenhagen are:
- June through August. While the city shines all year round, the long, sunlit days of summer provide loads of time to see and do everything you want on Copenhagen vacations. In July, most days see 17 hours of sunlight! Along with warm weather, you’ll enjoy more festivals and big events in summer, plus Copenhagen’s famous sidewalk cafes.
- December. Though summer may be the best time for trips to Copenhagen, there’s a great reason to visit Copenhagen in December: Christmas markets! The city really sparkles during this annual event, and the holiday cheer is widespread.
- Spring and fall. When winter comes to a close, the outdoor cafes and pubs open up, making Copenhagen come alive in spring. In the fall, the weather is comfortable, the tourist crowds are smaller, and popular restaurants and attractions are easier to navigate.
Prepare to be amazed in one of the world’s top foodie cities. Copenhagen’s cuisine—from the traditional to the new, from the seasonal to the ultra-local—is a smorgasbord of tantalizing tastes. If you’re traveling to Copenhagen, here are three dishes that will delight:
- Smørrebrød. This traditional open-faced rye bread sandwich, which can be enjoyed as a snack or lunch, is a must when visiting Copenhagen. The classic, affordable sandwich is a favorite of Danes (especially when topped with pickled herring) and can be ordered with various toppings, including veggies, meat, cheese, and egg.
- Seafood. Fresh seafood should be on your list of foods to sample when visiting Copenhagen. The coastal city built its well-deserved reputation by serving superb seafood caught in the neighboring waters of the Øresund Strait. The Danes love herring, and you’ll find it deliciously prepared in many ways, including pickled or fried. Another favorite is fiskefrikadeller—codfish balls seasoned with dill, parsley, onions, and lemon juice.
- Hot dogs. You read that right: hot dogs. No visit to Copenhagen is complete without indulging in the city’s delicious take on the hot dog. Called pølsers, they are the most widely enjoyed fast food in Denmark. If you want to eat like a local, order one from a street vendor topped with a scrumptious array of condiments that make them unlike any hot dog you’ve eaten at home.
There are so many things to do on our Copenhagen tours that you’ll want to pack well, so you’re prepared to spend all day exploring the city. Having the right stuff in your suitcase makes your trip more enjoyable. Like on any other trip, you’ll want to be prepared for unpredictable weather when you visit Copenhagen. Here are the essentials to toss in your suitcase:
- Your favorite walking shoes. Copenhagen is a beautiful, pedestrian-friendly city; walking is the best way to take it all in. You’ll want to have your favorite, comfiest walking shoes with you on our tours of Copenhagen. Whether strolling through Tivoli Gardens or exploring its charming cobblestoned streets, this pocket-sized city is perfect for walking.
- Layers. The days may be warmer, but temperatures tend to dip at night. Make sure you bring a jacket, scarf, and other easily packable items when visiting Copenhagen so you’ll be comfortable no matter the time of day.
- A raincoat and packable umbrella. Wet weather doesn’t bother the Danes. You’ll see locals biking in full rain suits during inclement weather. If you pack rain gear and a travel umbrella for our Copenhagen tours, you won’t miss a beat, even in wet weather.
- Sunglasses. For travel to Copenhagen between June and August, be sure to bring your favorite pair of shades. You’ll want to make the most of those long summer days.
- Dressier attire. You may want to pack dressier clothing if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance on our Copenhagen tours.
- Full-coverage layers for religious sites. When visiting Copenhagen, it is preferable not to visit churches, temples, or other religious sites with bare knees or shoulders, and entrance may be denied on this basis.
