Board your overnight flight to Lisbon today.
Welcome to Portugal! After settling into your hotel, get to know your Tour Director and fellow group members at a mixer before enjoying a welcome dinner. Linger over a glass of Port wine, swap stories, and get ready to share the trip of a lifetime.
Climb aboard your coach this morning for a guided sightseeing tour of Portugal’s colorful capital. You’ll make some stops along the way, so don’t forget your walking shoes!
- Begin at Edward VII Park, a hilltop green space that ranks as one of the largest—and most lovely—in Lisbon. Get your camera ready: Its panoramic views of the city demand more than a few snaps.
- Roll down toward the river Tagus and stop at the waterfront, leaving your coach for a close-up look at two of Lisbon’s most famous landmarks: the Monument to the Discoveries and Belém Tower. Paragons of Portuguese Gothic architecture, these twin structures were made with local limestone and stand as a testament to the city’s maritime heritage. (Belém Tower served as the setting-off point for explorers during the height of the Portuguese Renaissance, when the small country spearheaded the Age of Discoveries.)
- Make the short walk from the Tagus to the Monastery of the Hieronymites—better known as Jerónimos Monastery. Standing behind the Empire Square Garden, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is yet another prime example of Portuguese Gothic architecture. Admire it from the outside, then board your bus once more.
- Drive along Avenida da Liberdade—one of Portugal’s most luxe boulevards—past more Lisbon landmarks. You’ll navigate the busy roundabout at Marquis of Pombal Square; glimpse the horseshoe-shaped entrances of the Rossio Train Station; and spot the Santa Justa Lift, a 19th-century elevator turned beloved tourist attraction.
- Leave your bus once again for some free time before reconvening at Restauradores Square. Need recommendations? The Baixa da Lisboa neighborhood overflows with Neoclassical architecture, and the nearby Alfama district is dotted with miradouros, or lookouts, that let you peer out over the city’s famous red roofs.
Unwind for a spell, then join your group at a Lisbon tavern for an evening full of fado. Derived from the Latin word “fatum,” meaning “prophecy” or “fate,” this musical genre is one of Portugal’s national treasures, brought to life with guitar-like instrumentation and soulful vocals. Fado’s traditional theme is “saudade”—a word that doesn’t quite translate to English, but conveys a sense of both nostalgia and longing. Savor a dinner paired with local wines as you drink in a memorable live performance, then head back to your hotel for the night.
Please note: The fado show typically ends around 11pm.
Since the fall of the Estado Novo regime in the 1970s, Portugal—and Lisbon in particular—has become a standard-bearer for global gay rights. The country’s one of only a few to constitutionally ban discrimination based on sexual orientation, and national laws protecting the LGBTQ+ community are considered some of the strongest in the world. With a local guide in the lead, you’ll venture back out into Lisbon for a walking tour, visiting historic spots and learning just how far Portugal has come over the last 50 years.
- Start in Príncipe Real, a posh neighborhood that helped foster and shape the city’s LGBTQ+ culture. Among its 19th-century mansions and chic storefronts, you’ll find a number of iconic destinations—places like the Finalmente Club, one of the oldest gay bars in all of Lisbon. Continue walking to the Príncipe Real Garden and stop to reflect at the Tribute to the Victims of Homophobic Intolerance, a public art installation that has stood since 2017.
- Head down the bustling Rua da Atalaia to the Bairro Alto neighborhood, a vibrant quarter regarded as the hub of the city’s LGBTQ+ community. Embrace the ambiance of the restaurants, bars, and clubs you pass, and stop for a distinctly Portuguese treat—a shot of ginjinha. (Bars and cafes all over the city sell this local sour cherry liqueur, and a small bottle makes an excellent souvenir!)
- Make your way to Largo Trindade Coelho, home to the 16th-century Church of St. Roch, and pause to learn about Lisbon’s religious background. You’ll discover how past beliefs shaded Portuguese perceptions of sexuality—and how present attitudes have transformed them for the better.
- Stroll to Largo do Carmo and step back through time to the Carnation Revolution, the 1974 coup that toppled Europe’s longest-running dictatorship. While in this famous square, you’ll learn more about the uprising that paved the way for Portuguese democracy, as well as other acts of resistance carried out by the LGBTQ+ community.
- End your walking tour in the Rossio. This formerly infamous square was once a symbol of intolerance: Today, instead of executions and bullfights, it hosts everyday citizens and travelers alike, who use this mosaic-tiled plaza as a meeting place. Stop to discover how the Rossio anchors Lisbon’s multicultural communities, and end with a discussion about the country’s colonial past and the impact of the Portuguese diaspora.
Looking to add some more flavor to your itinerary? Look no further than this afternoon’s optional pastry class. Roll up your sleeves and learn how to craft the perfect pastel de nata, Portugal’s iconic custard tart. Prefer to spend some time alone? Pop into a pastelaria, or pastry shop, on your own and enjoy a pastel—or five. For a savory alternative, track down pastéis de bacalhau, salt cod mixed with potato and seasonings and fried to golden perfection.

Vividly hued architecture and impossibly perfect gardens will greet you in Sintra should you choose to add this special excursion to the former playground of Portuguese royalty. If you prefer to spend the day on your own, check out the National Tile Museum: Set in a former convent in the riverside Xabregas neighborhood, it pays homage to azulejos—Portugal’s famous, tin-glazed ceramic tiles.

Love is in the air, and today, you’ll get to celebrate EuroPride in Lisbon with revelers from Portugal, Europe, and beyond. Not only that, but you’ll also get to participate in Arraial Lisboa Pride—Portugal’s oldest, biggest, and brightest annual LGBTQ+ event. Your bus will drop you off in the heart of the city this morning; after, you’ll have the day to yourself. Find a good spot to watch the Pride parade, then join loved ones, new friends, and strangers alike in enjoying the rest of the day’s festivities.
Please note: There will be no bus pickup after the Pride parade. You’ll be responsible for making your way back to the hotel. For more information, you can visit ILGA Portugal’s website here.
How will you fill your last full day in Portugal? If you’re up for it, take to Lisbon’s streets once more and jump back into EuroPride. If either neighborhood spoke to you, head back to Bairro Alto or Príncipe Real and spend a few hours restaurant-hopping.
Whatever you decide, you’ll meet back up with your group in the evening for a farewell dinner at a local restaurant. Raise a glass to toast the beautiful memories you made, then return to your hotel to pack your bags.
Transfer to the airport for your flight home. If you’re extending your trip, you’ll hop aboard your bus instead, and make your way north to the riverside city of Porto by way of Coimbra.
Bid Lisbon adeus, or goodbye, and make your way north to Porto. En route, you’ll stop in the city of Coimbra for a guided walking tour. Portugal’s fourth-largest population center dates to the 1st century B.C., and monuments that tell the story of Roman and Moorish occupation stand alongside manicured parks and medieval streets.
Roam its mazy lanes with your local guide, maneuvering between ochre-colored buildings, and enter the University of Coimbra. The oldest institute of higher learning in Portugal and one of the longest continually operated in the world, it houses a flourishing botanical garden and the Joanina Library, filled with 16th-century tomes and other literary treasures.
After exploring its Old Town and riverfront, you’ll have free time for lunch before returning to your bus and continuing to Porto. Once there, take the rest of the day to relax, or head out on your own for some solo exploration.
Navigate narrow streets and old-world architecture like a true tripeiro, or Porto resident, as you follow your local guide on a sightseeing tour. Keep an eye out for azulejos—the intricately painted tiles that adorn church facades, train stations, and many other delightful nooks and crannies.
- Pass citywide icons, such as Liberty Square’s ornate neoclassical buildings and Carmelitas Church’s fanciful facade.
- Make friends with the Baroque-style Clérigos Tower. You’ll be able to spot this soaring steeple as you traverse Porto—use it as your North Star.
- Take a scenic drive through waterside neighborhoods and along the Douro riverfront. Watch for fishing boats on the water and churches tucked along the cobblestone streets.
- Step inside the city’s famed, neoclassical Stock Exchange Palace, which was built in the 19th century.
The best views of Porto are from the waters of the Douro. If you opt into this afternoon’s cruise, you’ll drift by hillside villas and under ancient bridges, ending with a guided tour of a Port wine cellar (complete with a tasting, of course).
Not joining the cruise? Spend your free afternoon uncovering the architectural and culinary treasures of the Ribeira district and try to hunt down a francesinha. This hearty, tomato sauce-soaked take on the French croque monsieur is a city specialty.

This evening, enjoy a farewell drink as you celebrate your trip with your fellow group members.
