Eastern Europe...Budapest to Berlin
Reply

The wife and I depart October 4. We're really looking forward to the trip. Is there anyone else that monitors these forums going? We chose about half of the excusrions and the extension to Berlin as well. Has anyone been there recently? Are there any places that we should visit on our free days?

This is our first trip together as husband and wife. She's been to other countries before and even a couple of the places that we're going. I'm excited and can't wait to go.

Thanks in advance!

We went last September. It was amazing. There are too many places to visit to mention but we had several of Rick Steve's books for each place we visited. He has walking tours, which we did, and we discovered places everyone else just walked past. The Perg Museum in Berlin was great. Potsdam was great even though we had people tell us it would not be worth it. The history walk lead by the college professor was a must as well. You have to try the Langos in Budapest, from the market. Bacon cheese and NO extra onions. Go to the bath in Budapest but take your own swimsuit or you will have to rent one, which I had to do, and it was sort of gross thinking about how many people had worn it before me. Rick Steves will get you there in his book. Don't be afraid of the transit system. It works smoothly. Buy the two or three day passes as you will make it places faster and easier than on foot. We never felt scared or feared for our safety. It was however, colder than I thought it was going to be. Rained quite a lot. I had a light rain jacket and gloves which basically saved my life. I also wore hats most of the time although in some of the churches you are required to take it off. The concentration camps were life altering. They do sell books there specifically relating to the camps. Our tour guide, Joerg, told us to be mindful of pocket pickers. I always had a backpack with me but I kept my money in the front pocket of my coat along with my camera.
