I know this is an old post, but when we were in Europe 2 years ago, we purchased international calling cards for a minimal fee in each country (they were sold everywhere...pharmacies, gas stations).  We were able to call home using public telephones and a code on the card.  We did this in Italy, France and Great Britain and didn't have to have our cell phone or worry about whether we would have service.  It worked perfectly and cost us nearly nothing.

You're on vacation. Being in constant communication with U.S. friends, unless it's an emergency, is not so critical that it can't wait till you return. Give it a rest.

I'm sorry,  but , when you travel and are leaving young ones behind it is necessary to keep in constant communication.  I'd rest better knowing they are o.k.

Unless they have discontinued the program, Verizon offers a Global Travel Program.  If you are a Verizon Wireless customer, they ship you a cell phone with global capabilities.  You follow simple instructions to deactivate your cell and activate the loaner.  When you return home, you reverse the process and mail the loaner back in the box provided by Verizon for that purpose.  There was a charge of $9.99 when I did this in May of 2008 plus the charge for minutes used.   You didn't have to change your number, very convenient in case someone at home needed to reach you in an emergency.   Several of my tour members had this plan and we found it very convenient for meeting back up after going off to do our own things.  It was also nice for our tour guide to have our mobile in at least one instance.   I hope Verizon still offers this because I'm headed back to Europe this May!

Read an article in the travel section of our local newspaper recently that I think had some good advice about cell phones. They recommended just buying a cheap cell phone and prepaid SIM card in the country you’re visiting. A cheap cell phone shouldn’t run you more than $40 or $50 dollars and a 1000 prepaid minutes SIM card should go for about $12 dollars. You should be able to find them anyplace electrical appliances and radios are sold. Just make sure the SIM card you buy includes prepaid minutes – you don’t want a contract for a temporary phone! Only drawback to this is that you will now have a new, international phone number which your contacts back in the States won’t know. Life is never perfect!
